Personal and Social Development, Well Being and Cultural Diversity

We love celebrating our birthdays in Reception! We sing Happy Birthday in English and Welsh and this week we all got to share a lovely chocolate smarties cake!! In Mrs Abel's class we now have 8 children who have turned 5, 16 are still waiting for their special day!

Creative Development - making Welsh cakes

As part of our St David's Day (Dydd Gwyl Dewi) activities we all had a chance to make Welsh Cakes. We helped measure the ingredients and then had a go at rubbing the flour and butter together. We had lots of fun rolling out the dough and then using the cutters to cut out our Welsh cakes. They smelt lovely and they tasted even better!

Creative Development - Music and Dance

We continued our Toy theme in Dance and Music this week when we listened to 'I'm moving like a robot'. The children tried to move different parts of their body like a robot - they thought about their movements being slow, jerky, stiff and heavy. They were very realistic! When they had had a few goes they tried to imitate a robot doing different actions - like riding a bike, walking to the shops or feeding an animal. Mrs Utting chose a few children to demonstrate their actions and the others had to guess what the 'robot' was doing.

Mathematical Development - length.

We have been investigating length this week. We had lots of fun measuring our patio using blocks. We placed the blocks end to end in a straight row and then counted how many blocks we'd used. We measured the patio in two different places and worked out which was the longest. When we'd finished we used the blocks to measure how tall we were. We tried to make the towers taller than Mrs Utting! Back in our classrooms we also had a go at measuring our length when we lay down. We measured our lengths very carefully using straws and recorded our measurements in our books.

Knowledge and Understanding - Materials

This week we have been learning about what different toys are made of. We worked with our Talking Partner to decide whether each toy was made of plastic, wood or metal. We talked about how it looked, how it felt and how it sounded when we tapped it. Then we took it in turns to tell the rest of our group what material our toy was made of and why. We placed each toy into our labelled Sorting Circles. We all did very well!

Physical Development - Problem Solving

We had loads of fun this week when we went down to the Nursery Yard to do some problem solving. Mrs Utting asked us if we could work out how we could get the teddy from one side of the yard to the other without his paws getting dirty! We all had a good look round and decided that we could use the play equipment in the yard to build teddy a path to walk on. We worked together to move blocks, chairs , slides and lots of other equipment. When we thought that we had finished a couple of us walked the path to check for gaps. If they found a gap they asked a friend to get something to fill it. When we were happy that teddy would be safe two of us took his paws and walked him carefully from one end of the path to the other. His paws were completely dry! Well done R2! We all got a housepoint for being so clever!
