Summer term overview



  This term our topic is 'Under the water'. Below is the overview of the areas of learning. We have already started discovering lots about this new topic and are excited for the weeks to come. 

Language, Literacy & Communication

    •        Recounts – holiday news, activites in the day, day trips
        Make collections of significant words linked to topic
        Stories/Poems/facts- topic realted reading material
        Shared writing – letters, invitations, lists, thank you letters         (mermaids/mermen party) (Dear Greenpeace etc)
        Use knowledge of rhyme to identify families of  rhyming cvc words
        Use capital letters and full stops in simple sentences.
        Reading books/guided reading
        Jolly Phonics – Recap 42 sounds and alternative spellings - JP         action, letter recognition and formation.
        Identifying sounds in words, blending/Dictation of simple words
        Use pictures and symbols to compose writing on screen
        Continue to introduce tricky words (reading/spelling)
        Recap letter names and capitals, understanding alphabetical order


Mathematical Development

·       Counting to 100, count on from a given number, saying the next number
·       Counting up to 20 objects, estimating and recording numbers
·       Recognising numbers between numbers
·       Using the language of direction
·       Adding by counting on and combining two sets/partitioning sets
·       Subtracting by counting back; removing small number of objects from a larger set
·       Use direct comparisons with length/height /distance (longer/shorter than);/weight (heavier/lighter than); capacity (holds more/less than)
·       Beginning to count in 10’s
·       Use 1p,2p,5p,10p coins to buy items
·       Use sand timers to time daily activities (use in role play)
·       Use direct comparisons when describing temperature (hot/cold)
·       Record collections using marks, numbers or pictures

Sorting objects found in the pond into living/non-living
        Spring/Summer walk in woods
        Sequence life cycle of a frog including ICT games
        Compare similarities and differences between salt water and fresh water environments (sea/pond)
        Discuss transport & clothing/equipment on/under the water
        Discuss rockpools/pond life/sea life/rivers
        Seas/oceans/climates/hot & cold with reference to their holiday experiences
        Think about shipwrecks (Titanic) what can we learn about the past?
        Create simple maps using a key with given symbols to find the shipwreck
        Observe the river and discuss seasonal changes

Physical  Development

Gross Motor - Large equipment – bikes, scooters, trikes, climbing frames, fort (see Creative movement)
·       Throwing and catching beanbags, balls and quoits.
·       Bouncing balls of different sizes individually and with a partner
·       Hitting ball with a bat along the floor and into the air.
·       Using large apparatus- balancing, climbing, pushing and pulling.
·       Fine Motor- Scissors skills, increasing control of paintbrush, pencil, tweezers. Magnetic fishing rods, Controlling mouse, Beebot, ipad etc
·       Manipulating clay/ playdough – making sea creatures
·       Play to learn & PESS (using underwater stories)· 


Creative Development      
  • Observational drawings of sea creatures
  • Make aquariums/rockpool- junk modelling

  • Sequin sparkly fish (The rainbow fish) – create a mobile
  • Sew mermaid’s purses (fill with treasures/sparkly stones)
